“Karen Bleitz creates interactive and sculptural books that draw readers in by allowing them to alter or manipulate the pages themselves. Books with machines, pop-ups, and magnets become dynamic stages through which the reader actively participates in debates around issues that range from the evolution of language to the role of gender and the body in communication. Her work often combines a use of industrial or mechanical materials to apply a constructed form upon a set of texts, or language itself, which then reveals profound underlying constraints within language which are seen to have a major impact on the freedom we have to think about the world. The transformations that take place within the pages of her works force the reader to question received assumptions and to experience matters of being, experience and language from an altered perspective.”
